Emergency dental care at Klinik Pergigian Genting, Setapak

Some dental infections need urgent hospital care.

If you have rapidly increasing facial or neck swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, swelling around the eye, or feel seriously unwell with a dental infection, seek urgent medical attention at a hospital emergency department.

Go to hospital urgently if you have

  • Rapidly increasing or spreading swelling of the face, jaw or neck
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Swelling spreading towards or around the eye
  • Fever with facial swelling or feeling significantly unwell
  • Significant facial injury involving more than just the teeth

Dental infections can occasionally spread beyond the tooth and into the surrounding tissues. The signs above may indicate a more serious spreading infection that requires urgent hospital assessment.

What we treat as an emergency

Severe toothache that painkillers are not controlling, or throbbing pain that keeps you awake.

Dental abscess - a collection of pus causing pain, swelling or a bad taste.

Broken or chipped tooth, whether or not it hurts. A fracture exposing the inner tooth needs prompt attention.

Knocked-out tooth - see the section below, because what you do in the first hour matters.

Lost filling or crown, particularly if the tooth is now sensitive or has a sharp edge.

Pain from a wisdom tooth, including swollen gum over a partly erupted tooth.

Something stuck between teeth that you cannot remove and that is causing pain or swelling.

Broken denture that you cannot wear or that is cutting your gum.

If a tooth is knocked out

For an adult permanent tooth, the first hour matters most.

  1. Pick it up by the crown, the chewing part. Do not touch the root.
  2. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline. Do not scrub it and do not use soap.
  3. Try to put it back in the socket the right way round and bite gently on a clean cloth to hold it.
  4. If you cannot reinsert it, keep it in milk. Not water. Saliva is the next best option - hold it inside the cheek if the person is old enough not to swallow it.
  5. Get to a dentist immediately.

Do not attempt to reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth, as this can damage the adult tooth developing underneath. Take the child to a dentist.

What to do while you wait

These reduce pain but do not treat the cause:

  • Take painkillers as directed on the packaging. Ask a pharmacist first if you take other medication
  • Apply a wrapped cold compress to the cheek for 15 minutes at a time
  • Sleep with your head raised on an extra pillow
  • Avoid very hot, very cold and sweet food and drink

Do not place aspirin directly on the gum - it is acidic and causes a chemical burn. Do not apply heat to a swollen area.

Where to go when we are closed

Klinik Pergigian Genting is closed on Sundays and after 5:00pm. Our longest closed period is Saturday evening to Monday morning.

If you have any of the red-flag signs listed above during that time, go to a hospital emergency department. For pain or swelling without those signs, the measures above will usually get you through until we open, and you should message us so we can see you when we do.

What happens at your appointment

The priority is finding the cause and relieving the pain. Your dentist will examine the area and usually take an X-ray, since most dental emergencies involve something that cannot be seen directly.

Treatment depends on what is found - a filling, root canal treatment if the nerve is infected, extraction if the tooth cannot be saved, or drainage and antibiotics where there is active infection.

Where infection is active, that may need controlling before definitive treatment can be carried out. This sometimes means two visits.

You will be told the cost before treatment begins. Examination starts from RM25.

Starting price, not a quotation. Your personalised treatment plan and fee estimate will be provided following assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an appointment for a dental emergency? No. Klinik Pergigian Genting accepts walk-in patients during opening hours. Messaging on WhatsApp first helps us prepare, but come in if you are in pain.

Are you open on Sunday for emergencies? No. Klinik Pergigian Genting is closed on Sundays. If you have rapidly increasing swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or feel seriously unwell with a dental infection, go to a hospital emergency department. For other urgent dental problems, message us and we will see you when we open.

Will antibiotics fix it? Antibiotics can control an infection but do not repair the tooth causing it. The underlying problem still needs treating, and antibiotics are only prescribed where clinically indicated.

My toothache stopped on its own. Do I still need to come in? Yes. Pain stopping does not mean the problem has resolved. When a tooth nerve dies from infection the pain stops, but the infection remains and can spread.

How much does emergency treatment cost? Examination starts from RM25. Treatment cost depends on what is needed and is explained before anything begins.

Can you see my child urgently? Yes. Klinik Pergigian Genting treats children, including urgent problems, during opening hours.
