Children's dentistry in Setapak: check-ups, fillings and prevention
Gentle dental care for children, from their first check-up to fillings and preventive care. Many of our younger patients are the children of families we have looked after for years, so we take extra time to make early dental visits comfortable and positive.

Baby teeth do fall out, but they still matter. They help a child chew and speak, and they hold the space for the adult teeth. A decayed baby tooth can cause pain, infection and problems for the adult tooth underneath. At Klinik Pergigian Genting in Setapak we treat children calmly and without rushing, and a check-up starts from RM25.

Why baby teeth decay quickly
- Frequent sugar. How often matters as much as how much. Sweet drinks, juice, biscuits and sweets through the day give bacteria a constant supply.
- Sleeping with a milk bottle. Milk or a sweet drink pooling in the mouth during sleep is a common cause of decay in a child's front teeth.
- Brushing that misses. Young children cannot brush well on their own yet; parents need to help until they are older.
- Thinner enamel. Baby teeth have thinner enamel than adult teeth, so a cavity spreads faster.
Signs of tooth decay in children
- Chalky white patches near the gum line (the early sign)
- Brown or black patches on a tooth
- A hole, or a tooth that is breaking away bit by bit
- Your child complains of pain, refuses food, or chews on one side only
- Swelling of the gum or cheek: come in straight away. See emergency dental treatment
Do baby teeth need treating?
Yes, in most cases. If a decayed baby tooth is left, infection can spread and affect the adult tooth developing underneath. A baby tooth lost too early can also cause the adult teeth to come through out of line. Your dentist will explain whether the tooth should be filled, treated or removed, based on your child's age and when that tooth is due to fall out.

When should a child first see the dentist?
Most dentists suggest a first visit when the first tooth comes through, or before the age of one. An early visit is usually short: the dentist looks at the teeth, shows you how to brush them, and your child gets used to the clinic before there is a problem. After that, a check-up every six months is the usual routine.
Tips for parents
- Brush your child's teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and help until they can brush well on their own.
- Keep sweet drinks and snacks to mealtimes, not all day.
- Do not let your child fall asleep with a bottle of milk or a sweet drink.
- Bring your child for a check-up before anything hurts, so their first visit is not an emergency one.
Frequently asked questions
My child's tooth has turned black. Does it need to come out? Not necessarily. A black patch may be a cavity that can still be filled, or staining that can be cleaned off. A dentist needs to look at it first.
My child is scared of the dentist. What can we do? We explain each step in simple words and start with something light, such as counting teeth. An early visit before there is any pain helps a great deal.
How much is a child's filling? Children's fillings at our clinic start from RM70.
