Teeth whitening in Setapak
Custom trays moulded from your own teeth. Your teeth and gums are checked first, and we tell you what shade change is realistic rather than what you hope for.

Klinik Pergigian Genting provides professional teeth whitening at our clinic on Jalan Genting Kelang, Setapak. Your teeth and gums are checked for decay and sensitivity before any whitening begins, and we will tell you what shade change is realistic for your teeth rather than what you might hope for.
Assessment starts from RM25.

Why teeth discolour
Understanding which type you have matters, because they respond differently.
Surface staining (extrinsic) builds up on the outside of the enamel from coffee, tea, red wine, curry, and smoking. This type often improves substantially with scaling and polishing alone, before whitening is even considered.
Internal discolouration (intrinsic) is the colour of the tooth itself. It darkens naturally with age as enamel thins and the yellower dentine beneath shows through. It can also follow trauma, or certain antibiotics taken in childhood. This is the type whitening addresses.
Most people have some of both.
What whitening will not change
This is worth knowing before you spend anything:
- Crowns, veneers, fillings and bridges do not whiten. Whitening gel has no effect on them. If you have tooth-coloured restorations on your front teeth, whitening the surrounding teeth can leave them looking darker by comparison. They may then need replacing to match, at additional cost.
- Grey discolouration generally responds less well than yellow.
- A single dark tooth after trauma may need a different approach.
- Teeth are not naturally brilliant white. A realistic result is your own teeth several shades lighter, not the shade seen in advertising.
We will assess which apply to you before recommending treatment.
First: is whitening suitable?
Whitening should not be carried out over untreated problems. Before starting, we check for:
- decay, which must be treated first - gel reaching a cavity causes severe sensitivity
- gum disease, which should be stable
- exposed root surfaces, which do not whiten and can be sensitive
- existing restorations on visible teeth
- cracks or leaking fillings
Scaling first. Whitening works on clean enamel. If there is surface staining or calculus present, scaling and polishing is done first - and it often lightens teeth noticeably on its own, before any whitening gel is used.
Custom whitening trays
Klinik Pergigian Genting makes custom whitening trays, moulded from an impression of your own teeth so the gel sits against the tooth surface instead of leaking onto the gums. A tray that fits properly is the difference between an even result and a patchy one.
We do not sell over-the-counter whitening kits. The tray is made for your teeth after an examination, which is also when we check there is nothing that should be treated first.
Whitening is gradual. You wear the trays over a period of days, and the change appears steadily rather than all at once.
Sensitivity
Some sensitivity during or after whitening is common. It is usually temporary and settles within a few days.
If you become sensitive during treatment, tell us. Sensitivity is usually managed by spacing the applications further apart, shortening each one, or using a desensitising gel alongside.
Tell your dentist if you already have sensitive teeth. It does not necessarily rule whitening out, but it changes how treatment is approached.
Making it last
Whitening is not permanent. Teeth pick up new staining, and the rate depends mostly on your habits.
- Cut down on coffee, tea, red wine and heavily coloured food, particularly in the first days after treatment when teeth stain more readily
- Rinse with water after staining drinks
- Do not smoke - it is the fastest way to undo the result
- Keep up regular scaling, which removes new surface staining
- Top-up treatment may be needed periodically
What it costs
Whitening with custom trays starts from RM750.
Assessment starts from RM25. If scaling is needed first, that is charged separately from RM100.

Frequently asked questions
Does whitening damage enamel? Professionally supervised whitening using approved products does not damage enamel. The risks are sensitivity and gum irritation, both usually temporary. Unsupervised high-concentration products bought online carry more risk.
How many shades lighter will my teeth go? It varies with your starting shade and the type of discolouration. Nobody can tell you a number in advance honestly. Your dentist will give you a realistic expectation after examining your teeth.
How long does it last? It depends on your diet and whether you smoke. Most people notice gradual return of staining and may want a top-up periodically.
Can I whiten with braces on? No. The brackets cover part of each tooth, so you would get an uneven result. Whitening after braces come off is common.
Do whitening toothpastes work? They remove some surface staining through mild abrasives. They do not change the underlying colour of the tooth, which is what whitening gel does.
Can I whiten if I have crowns or veneers on my front teeth? Whitening will not change them. Whitening the surrounding teeth may make them stand out. Worth discussing before you start, since matching restorations afterwards adds cost.
Is whitening safe while pregnant? It is generally deferred. Whitening is elective, and postponing carries no cost beyond waiting. Tell your dentist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
